CLAIRE CARRIES ALL BEFORE HER Claire Galloway - Team Zappi, won the third Women's Team Series Race held Melbourne course and very well organised by Russell Gavagan and the Velo Club Long Eaton; generous sponsorship was provided by Geoff Carter Architects. Claire judged the finishing hill to perfection to finish a bike length ahead of Anna Fischer - Max Gear RT with Kara Chesworth riding for Twickenham CC in 3rd place after a very race on a tough circuit. Early morning heavy rain might have caused a problem but thankfully it had cleared by the time the race got underway but within a mile the first casualty came with Sorelle Le Cornu of Team Zappi with a puncture and although she had a spirited chase she was never able to get back on; really the first lap, with its almost continual series of hills saw many riders lose contact with a bunch that was determined to race the course. Up for grabs was the lead in the Team Series overall which seemed just as important as the prize money. By mid way through the race the main bunch had split almost equally into two groups but the leading group gradually pulled away to build up a lead of perhaps 5 minutes entering the final lap. With the two top teams of the Series, Max Gear RT and Motorpoint/Marshals Pasta well represented in the lead bunch it would be the speed and hills that might just break up that group before the final hill. As the lead group turned to tackle the hill for the final time it was Anna Fischer who was first to get a gap but seeing this Claire Galloway immediately went after her at the bottom of the hill and effectively led all the way to the finish line to take a well deserved win. "This is the first time I have ridden this course" said Claire after the prize presentation so ably led by Di Moss. "I like hills and when the main bunch got away I was pleased to be there, after Anna went approaching the finish I knew I could not let het go so went after her and managed to get past for my first Team Series win. Last week I was in Jersey for the Town Centre Crits there and won both the Crit and the Road Race so I am really on form". RESULT 1. Claire Galloway Team Zappi 2. Anna Fischer MAX Gear RT 3.
